"Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

LifeROOTS client Susana Silva attended our Thanksgiving Potluck event recently, gracing us with her talents as she sang a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for all attendees at this festive event.  Susana, a member of our LifeWORKS program, works as a custodian as part of our City of Albuquerque contract, and was thrilled to perform among LifeROOTS friends and family and showcase her range of talents.  Her beautiful singing voice was praised by all who attended this holiday event, and we can't wait until Susan's next performance!

LifeROOTS Gives Back: LifeROOTS in the Community Helping Others

From left to right:  Sarah Lancaster, Leticia Sotelo, Grace Coca, Patty Sogan, Stephanie Becenti, Kami Pena, Janette Abeyta, Kathleen Strimple, Amy Mathis, Mary Becker, Nicole Rawls, Loni Alarid.

At LifeROOTS, volunteering in the community is important to all of us – and we are always looking for ways that our members and staff can get involved in “giving back” to those in need. Through our various community outreach projects, we are not only working to help others, but working to create an even stronger team here at LifeROOTS.

Our Children’s Therapy and Services team recently spent a day volunteering at the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico, which each week touches the lives of 40,000 hungry children, adults and vulnerable seniors who don’t have enough food to eat.  It was a great day for all of us here at LifeROOTS – and a day we know made a difference to so many in need throughout our community.

How You Can Help LifeROOTS This Holiday Season … and Beyond

Looking for a way to give back this holiday season … or just looking to donate items that you have which can help others?  LifeROOTS is seeking donations of a variety of items to help us continue to serve our clients, and is currently in need of the following:
  • Art supplies for all age groups, including paper stock, stickers (any and all kinds), water colors, acrylics, canvas or canvas boards, paint brushes, jewelry wire, plastic beads and mixing trays
  • Games and puzzles
  • Exercise equipment
  • Coats for children age 3 and under
  • Toiletry items (e.g., soap, shampoo, etc.)
Donations can be dropped off at LifeROOTS at 1111 Menaul Boulevard NE in Albuquerque, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or sent by mail to the attention of Kathleen Cates at LifeROOTS.   In addition, you can call LifeROOTS at 505-255-5501 to schedule a drop off of items.

Any and all donations would be greatly welcomed – and truly make an impact in helping our clients.  Whether items/supplies that you already have around the house, or a company interested in making a corporate donation of needed items, your donations can make a tremendous difference in helping our LifeROOTS members continue to thrive.

As always, we thank you for your support of the work we do – and for your role in helping us offer the programs and services that continue to help those with disabilities each and every day.

“Love And Logic”® Seminars Provide Simple Solutions And Practical Techniques To Help Parents

LifeROOTS is pleased to continue to offer parents a unique opportunity to learn some valuable parenting skills geared to help today’s parents raise responsible kids – while also having more fun in their role as parents.

The program, Love and Logic®,  is being offered at LifeROOTS as a five week program that meets once a week, and is open to parents with children of all ages.   The Love and Logic program provides a practical and entertaining parent education group, and is based on a philosophy founded in 1977 by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, MD.   Love and Logic is the approach of choice among leading educators, parents and other professionals worldwide, and is a trusted and used successfully for more than 30 years

The LifeROOTS “Love and Logic” program is led by Sandy Silverman, LMHC and Sarah Lancaster, LMSW, both who are trained facilitators for the Love and Logic program.  It is a program geared to make parents laugh, remember their own childhood, and learn this powerful parenting philosophy.  The group teaches parents easy techniques for common parenting issues, as well as provides parents with the opportunity to share their parenting struggles and give feedback on the implementation of the new techniques they’ve learned.  Specific topics and issues addressed in this thought-provoking, interactive program include answers to these day-to-day parenting challenges:
  • How to handle disruptions at meal times
  • How to get children to stay in their own bed
  • How to end temper tantrums
  • Is there a way to discipline my oddler in public without creating a scene?
  • How to get children up and about in the mornings
  • How to stop whining and bickering
Many local parents have already benefited from the Love and Logic program offered at LifeROOTS – the program has become so popular among Albuquerque parents that it is now being offered six to eight times a year.

For more information about the next groups, and additional information about this groundbreaking parents program and how you can benefit, contact Sarah Lancaster at 553-5331, or our main office at 505-255-5501.

LifeROOTS Groundskeeping Services: Transforming Yards … While Transforming Lives of Those With Disabilities!

Our Groundskeeping/Grounds Maintenance Services program continues to grow and expand at LifeWORKS. In addition to offering people with disabilities opportunities for meaningful employment within the community, our Groundskeeping/Grounds Maintenance Services program provides people with dedicated workers committed to a job well done – and benefits all involved. Through this program, building managers, property owners and homeowners save time and money, and people with disabilities are able to provide a valuable service through their hard work.

In addition to the numerous groundskeeping contracts LifeWORKS has with some major companies and organizations in New Mexico, our LifeWORKS groundskeeping team also is helping local residents throughout the region beautify and care for their yards. This summer, LifeWORKS groundskeeping team members were out in full force helping to add “life” to some local yards – garnering thanks, and praise, from many local residents who witnessed first-hand how LifeWORKS worked diligently, and skillfully, to help transform their yards.

One local resident summed up her experiences with the LifeWORKS Groundskeeping Program this summer – and shared photos of the great work done by the team.

“My yard was a big grey mess... full of grey rocks and absolutely no life. After meeting with Matthew from LifeWorks, we discussed my budget and my wish for a pretty yard with color. Not only did he come back to me quickly with a drawing and ideas, but he came up with great solutions that fit my budget. Work started on a Monday with six workers showing up led by Chris, the landscape architect and every one of them worked from early morning until late in the day removing the ugly grey rock. Working from home, I had the benefit of listening to their conversations that involved Chris teaching the workers about how to do things, how a drip system is installed, showing them how to easily move rock, dig holes for plants … and everything else that goes into creating a beautiful outdoor space. After only a week, my yard went from a boring gray mess to a beautiful outdoor oasis that instantly enhanced my property – all within my budget and within the time frame they promised. Best of all, not only did I gain a beautiful new yard, but I gained a great deal personally -- knowing that I gave six great guys an opportunity to learn and work.”

For more information about LifeWORKS Groundskeeping/Grounds Maintenance services and how your company, organization – or your own backyard – can benefit from our team of dedicated and skilled groundskeepers, call us at 505-255-5501 or visit us at www.liferootsnm.org/businesssupport.

Our Mobile Food Cart Continues to Bring New Opportunities to People with Disabilities

The “Feed Me Now” program continues to not only provide jobs and personal growth for those with disabilities, but is being embraced by a number of local companies. At the Whitener Law Firm in Albuquerque, in fact, employees eagerly await the arrival of the “Feed Me Now” cart each week – not as much for the opportunity to enjoy the beverages and snacks from the cart, but for the opportunity to talk and interact with the LifeROOTS employees they have gotten to know as a result of this important program.

As part of the Career Discovery program at LifeROOTS, the “Feed Me Now” program centers on a mobile food and drink cart – stocked and staffed each day by people with disabilities. The program began by having the cart, and LifeROOTS clients, travel throughout the LifeROOTS offices to help them learn important skills such as change making, customer service skills and social interaction. Seeing how successful the program was in helping people with disabilities thrive and learn important life skills, the program continued to expand – and now, the “Feed Me Now” cart travels daily to a number of local businesses throughout the community eager to be part of this exciting program that helps so many people.

At companies that have embraced the program such as the Whitener Law Firm, the “Feed Me Now” program has been successful on so many levels – and has proven to be a win-win for all involved.

“When I was approached by LifeRoots about allowing their food card to visit our office, I believed that we were going to help those who participate in the program,” recalls Leanne Duree, Chief Financial Officer at the Whitener Law Firm. “The truth is that we are the ones who benefit from the weekly visits. Everyone from LifeRoots who has been to our office demonstrates determination and work ethic, something we can all learn from.”

Others at The Whitener Law Firm share Leanne’s sentiments about the benefits of this unique program, and how much they enjoy the opportunity to talk to the Feed Me Now employees each week.

“All of us at the firm look forward to the food cart every Thursday. Every person who has visited our offices from LifeROOTS is an inspiration,” notes Matthew O’Neill, owner and attorney at Whitener. Legal Assistant Raelina Marquez agrees, noting that “The ladies that visit our office every Thursday truly brighten my day.” Kyra Thompson, Legal Assistant, further notes that “It’s wonderful to see a program that cares so much about their participants and the way the organization benefits people with disabilities. By participating in the Feed Me Now program, Whitener Law Firm and its employees have had the pleasure of watching the individuals grow in their job skills. When the snack cart arrives, we are always greeted with a bright smile, which in turn, brightens our day. “

For more information about the Feed Me Now program, and ways to get involved, contact Gwendolyn Kiwanuka at 255-5501 or gwendolynK@liferootsnm.org.

Rio Rancho Day Hab Partners with Storehouse West

Since October 2011, LifeROOTS has been involved in helping Storehouse West as they work to provide food, clothing and assistance to residents of Sandoval County.  Through this partnership, our Day Hab clients have the opportunity to work at the Storehouse West on Veranda Drive in Rio Rancho – gaining some important life skills as they work to help others in the community by helping to pack bags for the seniors receiving groceries at this Storehouse West location.

Under the direction of Rio Rancho Day Hab Program Supervisor Susan Roman, and with the direct supervision of LifeROOTS staff member Garrett Bennett, a group of between three and five LifeROOTS Day Hab clients enthusiastically travels every Monday to the Storehouse West location.  Once there, they follow a “checklist” of non-perishable items to be selected from the shelves and packed up for seniors.  Through this job, LifeROOTS clients are not only able to gain experience in some practical work skills, but they have the opportunity to talk and socialize with the seniors picking up much-welcomed supplies at Storehouse West.
Day Hab clients look forward to these weekly experiences at Storehouse West – each week, between three and five individuals participate in the program, working from a pool of eight individuals.  Our clients participating in this program – Tara, Leah, Brian, Denise, Jess, Brittany, Cyanne and Jason – have truly grown from their experiences working at Storehouse West.  We are so happy to be working with Georgiana Kugle, Executive Director of the Storehouse and Shirley Underwood, Storehouse Administrative Director, on this program which helps so many people throughout our community, as well as helps those with disabilities gain important work and life skills.

We’re grateful for this opportunity to work with Storehouse West and enable our clients to experience “giving back” through this valuable community service.  In addition, we are proud to be involved with such an important cause in the community, and look forward to continuing to help Storehouse West in their mission to help those in need throughout our community.

Our Day Hab programs in both Albuquerque and Rio Rancho  offer important hands-on training and supported employment opportunities for the disabled.  For more information, or to see how your business can become involved, call us at 505-255-5501.

LifeROOTS Once Again Takes Top Honors In Annual DDSD Cookie Contest!

For the Third Year, LifeROOTS Comes Up with Winning Cookie Recipe and Honored with Award from the Developmental Disabilities Support Division.

The LifeSKILLS class at LifeROOTS was recently honored with the distinction of First Place in the 5th annual DDSD Cookie Contest.  Each year, dozens of agencies from the Metro Albuquerque area submit entries for this fun cookie contest, sponsored by the Developmental Disabilities Support Division.

LifeSKILLS students Josh Garcia, Katherine Gilbert, Jessica Moon, Vanessa Morgan and Jesse Cruz, along with staff members Andrea Baca and Amy Avila, were behind this year’s “winning cookie.”  Amy came up with the idea for the cookie – a “Christmas Kringle cookie – and the group then worked together to look up the recipe on the Internet.  The class then continued to work closely together and were involved in all phases of the preparation of the cookies – shopping for supplies and baking the cookies together as a group.  On December 12th, the group delivered the cookies to enter them in the contest.  The official “Cookie Contest” and judging took place on December 13th – and the entire class was there to accept their First Place award!  The class worked under the direction of Lily Duran, Day Habilitation Supervisor at the Menaul Center for Independence.

As First Place Winners, the class was awarded a Pizza Party at Itz – the party, which took place after the holidays, gave the class the opportunity to enjoy a great lunch with DDSD, as well as enjoy winning prizes in the arcade!  Both the Cookie Contest and Winners Pizza Party were great experiences for the class – and made for some very special times for all involved.

This year marks the third year that LifeROOTS has had the winning entry in the DDSD Cookie Contest.  The wining “Christmas Kringle” cookies have already become favorites here at LifeROOTS – and have been featured at a number of our events, including our April Open House.

A great -- and delicious -- job and congratulations to everyone involved.  We can’t wait to see what recipes LifeROOTS is working on for next year’s entry!

Children’s Therapy and Services: Doing Good In The Community Does Good For All!

Our Children’s Therapy and Services team is dedicated to helping to enhance the lives of children with developmental delays – and is also committed to helping others throughout the community, as well.  In order to help the most vulnerable in our community, we participate in a number of  team-building activities throughout the year to assist those in need … as well as to help build our strength as a team.

This past August, the team came together to volunteer at the Road Runner Food bank for a few hours to wrap pizza to deliver to help feed the hungry.  In addition, members of the Children’s Therapy and Services team also participated in the City of Albuquerque’s Homeless Outreach event in October.  We gathered clothes, blankets and various other donations and handed them out to the homeless at this event.

Volunteering in the community is important to all of us here at LifeROOTS.  With this in mind, and in order to “give back” to help those in need, the Children’s Therapy and Services team makes it a point to try to incorporate some sort of community outreach activity into our calendars several times a year. It provides us with an opportunity to come together as a team and do something good for the community.  In addition, it also gives us an opportunity to do something fun as a team outside of work – again, helping others as we help create an even stronger team here at LifeROOTS.

Two Organizations, One Common Goal: Partnering To Help People With Disabilities Thrive In The Workplace

For so many people living with a disability, working in a meaningful job within the community can make a tremendous difference.  When people with disabilities work, everyone benefits:  employers gain skilled, motivated and enthusiastic workers who are committed to a job well done; and workers with disabilities gain a true sense of independence, pride and accomplishment in being part of the local workforce.  Not only that, but studies have consistently shown that employing people with disabilities has a distinct, positive effect on overall staff morale – and businesses seen as “disability-friendly”  are viewed positively by potential customers, clients and the community as a whole.

LifeROOTS has long been committed to partnering with numerous organizations and employers throughout the region to secure business contracts to ensure that people with disabilities can work in jobs that they love throughout the community.  We’re proud of the partnerships that we have built with these businesses – and we’re equally proud of a very special partnership that we have created with another organization serving the needs of those with disabilities – Adelante Development Center (www.GoAdelante.org).

Through our long-time partnership with Adelante, our organizations work together to ensure that individuals with disabilities in our community are given opportunities to thrive in the workplace – and beyond.  In particular, we work directly with Adelante’s Facilities Support Services (FSS) on three important business contracts to help both of our organization’s clients – working closely on our contracts with Kirtland Air Force Base, the City of Albuquerque and DTRA (Defense Threat Reduction Agency).  Currently, LifeROOTS has 42 employees who are employed through these three contracts; Adelante has 29 employees employed through these contracts – bringing the total number of individuals employed by our two organizations to 71.
